| One of the most effective ways to promote your business online, especially if you use search engine optimization to build traffic, is linking. Getting inbound links. However, as a certified Web CEO professional, and someone who also uses only "white hat" optimization strategies, I see people make a lot of mistakes when using this technique. Below are some of the strategies that I use to make linking more effective, as well as raise my rankings in the search engines. 1. Do your homework first. You're probably wondering what "white hat" techniques are. "White hat" techniques are techniques that will always work with the search engines, like writing articles, blogs, and press releases, and optimizing individual pages for the search engines. These are the primary techniques I use in addition to linking because they work. Just ask Tinu Abayomi-Paul, the owner of http://www.freetraffictip.com. Tinu is an expert when it comes to using search engines to build traffic to her sites. She wrote me the other day to thank me for "inspiring her". I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I do know that she uses a lot of the same techniques I do to promote my sites. She now has over 90,000 relevant entries in Google, more than a lot of the top "gurus" on the internet. The fact is, the more pages you have listed in the search engines, and the more links you have pointing back to your site, the more likely you are to be found. Although writing articles, blogs, press releases, and optimizing pages definitely works, you still have to do your homework. This means actually doing a search in the search engines to find out how sites get to the top, i.e. what keywords they use, how their pages are optimized, etc. I use Alexa, http://www.alexa.com, for this because it allows me to look at traffic stats, as well as see what sites are linked to eachother. To get started, search for the keywords you are targeting. Take a good look at the sites at the top. This includes studying the keywords, titles, and descriptions they use in their headers. Also, read the text of the pages. It's not that hard to optimize your page(s). Just write search engine friendly content that repeats your keywords. Make your content easy for your readers to read and understand though. Now this may sound juvenile, but again, it works. Tools like Keyword Density Analyzer, http://www.keyworddensityanalzyzer.com, and Web CEO, http://www.smallbusinesshowto.com/ht/search.html, can tell you if you are on the right track. You can also read Linking Matters, http://www.linkingmatters.com. This short, and free ebook in PDF, will give you more tips on linking. 2. Link to complementary sites. I get link requests all the time, and I have to reject about half of them. The reason why is that I won't link to sites that have nothing to do with mine. I offer small business, internet marketing, and search engine optimization and submission products and services. Links to quote sites, joke sites, and shoe sites don't fit with this. The key here is to understand that not only does Google, the most important of all the search engines, look at how many links are pointing back to your site, but they also look at the relevance of the links. Sites that are similar, or complementary to yours, give you more credibility and higher page rank than having tons of sites pointing back to you that have nothing to do with your site. Make the links pointing back to your site relevant. 3. Choose relevant, highly searched for, low competition keywords for your anchor text. This tip relates to tip four. Before you start sending out link requests to other webmasters, make sure that you're targeting the right keywords. Not only are a lot of relevant links important, but your keywords should be keywords that will get you traffic. 4. Change your anchor text. Recently Google decided that links with the same text between your {{a href=""}} and {{/a}} text should be different. Too many links pointing back to your site that had the same text "looks" like spam. This doesn't mean it is spam, and sometimes, you don't have control over how others link back to your site. However, if you decide to exchange links with others, vary your anchor text. 5. Try other alternatives to software. Although there are many software programs out there you can use to help you automate this process, I caution you to be careful when using this kind of software. Although it may speed things up for you, you may also end up with a lot of links pointing back to you that have no relevance. Also, these programs really won't help you as much as you think if you don't change your anchor text once in awhile. If you do choose to use software to automate the process, make sure that you personalize your emails. Again, do your homework and make sure that you are actually sending out email to sites that complement yours. No one likes to receive emails that say "Dear Webmaster". Using a directory script on your site can help you because others can visit your site and add their links. Just make sure that you check your directory once in awhile to see who is linking to you. Also, make sure that you set up your script in such a way that others have to have a link pointing back to you first before your script will accept their site. Sites like this will allow you to choose your partners, search for new partners, and exchange links without being bombarded with email or generic requests. Turns out all he could conjure up was just that. Now I know myspace advertising can be a tremendous opportunity for those savvy enough to tap this resource. My friend Chris was just begging for a crash course on myspace marketing so I whipped one up for him.

Myspace marketing isn't about how many friends you have or even about where they are located. If they are located in another state doesn't even matter. For all I know they might have a relative that lives in phoenix and could use my friend Chri's services. What does matter is your ability to communicate effectively with this new potential customer base. And the only way of doing that is to interface with them directly.

Figure out what the multiplier is and then try it on a competitor.

There isn't a holy grail of seo optimization where by you will achieve a high ranking google search engine position. There is however certain things you can do to improve your chances of ranking high in search engines and tip the scales in you favor.
1. Always title your documents - Never, ever leave a page 'Untitled'. Include keywords in the title of your page. The keywords should be a combination's of words. For instance if you are selling cheap rabbit food, don't title your page 'rabbit'. Give it a more meaningful name like 'Discount Rabbit Food', 'Cheap Rabbit Food' etc. Just naming your pages with one keyword is vague and will severely affect your position in a search engines search results.
2. When beginning to write your document or product sales pitch. Include your seo keywords in an h1 tags at the beginning of your page. Preferably just below the body tag. You can use css to make the keywords less noticeable. But don't over do it. You can easily go overboard with this. Limit your seo keywords to 3-5 per page. Use css to re-size the font so it doesn't look out of place.
3. When creating pages or html documents it helps to name them in this convention.

Instead of:

Most search engines treat the "-" as a space character and skip it when indexing your pages. They have a harder time reading long lines like 'searchengine'.
4. When placing images in your website use the 'alt' and 'title' tags. Using the 'alt' tag is considered good etiquette, since it is used by the visually impaired.
5. When creating documents or html keep your documents organized into folders. Again using your keywords in the folders name and the file name. Try to use a more broad keyword for the folder name and a more specific or group of keywords for the file name. Again using the "-" in between your seo keywords.
For instance:
If you were preparing a tutorial on seo optimization like i'm doing here. It would be wize to place the file in "/seo/" <<--- search-engine-optimization-tutorial.html
6. When linking between pages use your keywords in the anchor text of a link.
7. Make your seo changes to your website prior to having it indexed by google. It's a pain having to wait for google crawl your site again when you've made important changes. If your site hasn't been indexed by google you'll want to get a link to your website on a high ranking site and one that is crawled by google on a daily basis.
If you have a website that offers products or services, place and ad on a high traffic website like craigslist. Use your keywords heavily on the first paragraph of your advertisement. However don't rely on craigslist for all your traffic. You'll soon notice that once you've optimized your advertisement with some of the search optimization tricks found here, the ad will slowly start to decline in position on google's search engine results. So only depend on this technique when you want to get your site indexed initially.
8. Republish your sites navigation at the end of your pages. Not only is this a good for navigation but you'll also be able to squeeze and extra seo keyword.
9. Always include Meta tags in your html documents. Include your search engine optimized keywords in your description.
10. Don't ever stop trying new things. Search Engine Optimization (seo) is an ever changing mix of techniques. What works today might not always work tomorrow.

Pay your bills or invest in yourself?
Most of us will be receiving a nice stimulus check/I.R.S refund Check (ie. Free money or money you've earned) in the coming weeks and for the majority of us the bulk of that money will be used to pay down debts. However, before you go and dump money that you won't see again for another year why not stop and invest that money in yourself?
Think about it. You only receive One I.R.S refund check from the government per year and the other 364 days your dead broke. Instead of taking that check and sending it off to debtors and feeling poor the second you do, why not start a business? If your successful you'll pat yourself in the back for taking a courageous leap of faith. If you fail miserably you can at least say that you've tried.
Remember, your not the only one who owes debtors.
For instance, I know of a nice couple who live down the street from me. I was chatting with them a couple of weeks ago and mentioned they were dying to get their irs refund to pay their past due mortgage. Turns out they were behind 3 months and were in default for a total of $2,400.00 and some change. They were set to receive an irs refund for $3,500 meaning they would still have $1,100 or so left. They were so happy they were going to have money to pay what they owed an still be set for another $800.00 dollar mortgage payment in the next month and would have $300.00 left to save up for the month after that.
I cringed at the taught at what would happen when they ran out of money. They'll be here in this same situation again in a very short period of time, I taught to myself.
The next time hoping for a different life vest to drop from the sky.
Please, If I reach anybody out there in cyber space. Don't be stupid do something useful with whatever money comes your way.

I've been on the internet for quite a while now, so long that to even think about it brings a tear to my eye. And though, I've made some money here and there the bulk of my money has been made offline. I can still remember the first time I was introduced to the internet. I was in eight grade ( old by some standards) and I came upon this girl who was in the library. After chatting her up for a couple of minutes I asked what she was doing. She said she was building a webpage.
From then on I was hooked. Very soon I was making my own little websites. Though sadly I never got any visitors it was an extremely rewarding time for me. I first began to learn HTML and FROM there I learned about PHP pages and then I got into database driven website powered by mysql etc..
However, Now that I really think about it. It was all for fun, I didn't really make a whole lot of money. In fact the bulk of the time I spent making those little geocities pages was for fun rather than for money.
Now all you hear on the internet is how to make money blogging about this shit and that shit, how you can be an adsense millionaire. How you can quit your day job investing stocks, real-estate gurus on t.v saying you can make millions investing in foreclosures. Late night infomercials with Dave Espino, telling you how to get rich being an eBay selling your worthless shit.
It's all fucking mind bogging...
So for a change I've listed a couple of ways you can actually make money offline with little to no effort.

I've recently only begun to admit that I might very well be a procrastinator. For instance, I hate setting deadlines for myself, goals or whatever you want to call them. In fact, I only write in this blog because half the time I ain't got shit to do.
I prefer to just let the chips fall where they may and am of the mindset of "It'll get done when it gets done Bitch!. Now get me another beer and take that damn smirk of you face or so help me."
Can this type of behavior even be changed? Maybe not if you'd done it for so long perhaps you don't have any chance to change.

They want overnight success!! Hundreds of thousands of visitors, products being purchased, linked to hundred's of other websites. First on google search results etc...and quite frankly a website with 5 pages (Home | About | Services | Contact | Some other Page) isn't sufficient.
I've always told them and lost a shit load of work in the process.

2. Establish a loyal fan base. Meaning, visitors who will come back to your site on a daily basis.
3. Communities Rule the Internet - Remember that and you will succeed!!
Once you have a decent site with a couple of hundred articles, Visitors in the Thousands etc. You have to setup up a way for your website's visitors to generate content for you. ie. Bulletin Boards, Blogs, Gallery Uploads, Rating Scripts etc.. etc..
4. Don't limit your websites marketing solely online. Meaning, slap a sticker on the back of your moms head with your website url. You'd be surprise at the number of loyal visitors you'd build if you advertise off line. Why? Because when the person see your stickers or banner or whatever it sparks his/her curiosity. The person will be dying to get home and log onto your website. Now on the other hand, if he/she is already online and Is just surfing, they might come across your site take one look at it and never come back.
5. Only then and only then can you expect to be ranked high on google search results.
In fact don't even bother with google rankings. If you have a decent site, that attracts just even one loyal visitors you have done your job. They in turn will let others know.
JUST DON'T FUCKING EXPECT SUCCESS OVERNIGHT.

I've recently had to pull my credit report and noticed that there is an immense amount of websites claiming to do it for free. However, I soon found out that either I had to register for other products or services they offered in order to get my report. I wanted to get my report from the 3 largest credit bureau's TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Now I've seen the commercials from freecreditreport.com but was not happy when I visited the site. I did however find a great source, https://www.annualcreditreport.com
Within a matter of minutes I had all three credit reports in hand. I've already highly recommended them to friends and family. The draw back however is that you only get one credit report check per year.
For me though that was quite enough.
